Associate Director

A key strategic appointment within the firm, offering the opportunity to play an integral role in the future growth and succession planning of the business.

The successful candidate will join the Management Team and take responsibility for managing a portfolio of clients, leading and developing the accounts team, and supporting the ongoing development and modernisation of the practice.

There is genuine long-term progression potential within the role, including the opportunity for future Director progression and equity participation if desired for the right individual.

The Role

This is a varied and senior-level position combining client portfolio management, team leadership, operational development, and technical support.

Key responsibilities will include:

Client Portfolio Management

  • Managing your own portfolio of clients
  • Acting as the primary point of contact for client relationships
  • Taking over an established portfolio from a retiring Director, with opportunity to grow and develop the portfolio over time
  • Providing high levels of client service and ongoing business support
  • Reviewing accounts and tax work prepared by the team
  • Preparation of accounts and tax returns for more complex or urgent assignments where required
  • Supporting Directors on larger and more technically complex client matters

Leadership & Team Management

  • Line management responsibility for members of the accounts team
  • Managing workflow, planning and prioritising work across the team
  • Developing and implementing training plans for team members and trainees
  • Supporting and mentoring staff at all levels
  • Reviewing work
  • Assisting with recruitment planning and involvement in hiring processes
  • Mentoring trainee accountants and supporting professional development across the department

Operational & Business Development

  • Supporting implementation of new technologies and working practices
  • Driving process improvements and standardisation across the accounts function
  • Assisting with digitalisation and development of best-practice systems
  • Delivering regular technical updates and guidance to the team
  • Networking and supporting business development initiatives
  • Supporting onboarding of new clients and identifying growth opportunities within the practice

About You

The successful candidate will ideally have:

  • Significant experience within a general practice accountancy environment
  • Strong all-round technical knowledge across accounts preparation and taxation
  • Good understanding of personal and business taxation
  • Strong technical knowledge of FRS 102 and FRS 105 reporting standards
  • Previous experience managing staff and reviewing work
  • Excellent communication and client relationship management skills
  • A proactive and commercially minded approach
  • Strong organisational and leadership capability

Experience or interest in rural or farming businesses would be advantageous, though not essential.
